BGH FecroTHERM are ferritic iron-chromium-aluminium heating resistance alloys containing up to 25% chromium and more than 5% aluminium, which, due to their high electrical resistivity and low density, require less material than BGH NicraTHERM for the same power output.
They are particularly suitable for use in oxidising, sulphurous and carburising atmospheres and remain magnetic up to the Curie temperature of 600 °C.

At temperatures above 1000 °C (538 °F), a high-temperature-stable, well-adhering and electrically insulating aluminium oxide layer forms on the surface of FecroTHERM alloys, making them suitable for operating temperatures up to 1400 °C (2550 °F). This allows for higher surface loads compared to NicraTHERM alloys. The oxide layer also acts as a barrier to prevent the progressive diffusion of oxygen inwards and aluminium outwards, thereby positively influencing service life.

FecroTHERM alloys are magnetic up to a Curie temperature of 600 °C and are particularly suitable for use in oxidising, sulphurous or carburising atmospheres. In particular, when in direct contact with reducing atmospheres, the heating elements must be properly pre-oxidised or regularly re-oxidised.

Following use at temperatures above 1000 °C (538 °F), the alloys may develop cold brittleness due to significant grain growth, which subsequently makes them susceptible to impact and shock loads when cold. This behaviour is characteristic of ferritic heating resistance alloys.

So-called reactive elements such as zirconium (Zr), yttrium (Y), cerium (Ce), hafnium (Hf) or lanthanum (La) can be added to the alloys in small quantities to improve the stability and adhesion of the oxide layer.

Properties
BGH FecroTHERM 25‑5 is a ferritic iron‑chromium‑aluminum alloy (FeCrAl) that is particularly suitable for use in high‑temperature applications above 1000 °C due to the formation of a stable Al₂O₃ layer. The material is characterized by high scale resistance, high electrical resistivity, and excellent corrosion resistance in chemically demanding environments with oxidizing, sulfur‑containing, or carburizing atmospheres. BGH FecroTHERM 25‑5 is magnetic up to approx. 600 °C and is suitable for applications with operating temperatures up to 1400 °C.

Area of Application and Typical Applications Examples
BGH FecroTHERM 25‑5 is used as a heating element in high‑temperature or sintering furnaces, particularly at high operating temperatures. Typical areas of application are electric furnces for industrial heat treatment, the glass and ceramics industry, and the chemical industry.

Delivery Conditions

  • Wire annealed or annealed, pre‑oxidized (coils, barrels, on spools up to 3.0 mm possible)
  • Straightened bars
